Addressing violence against women in the border areas of post-conflict Armenia

The purpose of this project is to enable and empower local communities in the border regions of Armenia to address VAW and counteract the lack of protection and prevention mechanisms. The project includes engagement with local communities to stand against VAW, as well as to formulate and implement local action plans under UNSCR 1325, ensuring that women victims of violence know their rights, have active networks of support, and receive adequate support from frontline staff. Our ultimate goal is to take one step further towards the elimination of VAW in Armenia.

The project is being implemented in Gegharkunik, Lori, and Tavush regions.

Creating Resilience among Human Rights Defenders in Georgia and Armenia

The project supports two well-established CSOs—NDOBA in Georgia and Democracy Today (DT) in Armenia—to strengthen the resilience of human rights defenders in increasingly challenging political contexts. In Georgia, civic space has been severely restricted, particularly for human rights organisations, while in Armenia CSOs currently operate more freely, though democratic gains remain fragile.

NDOBA will provide structured psycho-social support to human rights defenders in Georgia, helping them manage stress, prevent burnout, and sustain their advocacy. DT will work in Armenia’s vulnerable border regions to strengthen civic engagement, counter misinformation, and support democratic participation, particularly ahead of the 2026 parliamentary elections.

A core component of the project is building a sustainable partnership between the two organisations, fostering cross-border learning, solidarity, and coordinated efforts to protect democratic values.

Strengthening Democratic Participation in Vulnerable Regions

This project addresses the urgent need for democratic education among Armenia’s most vulnerable populations ahead of the June 2026 elections, with a focus on border communities, refugees, and displaced people.  Timed to the 2026 electoral cycle, the project enables immediate participation in voter education, election monitoring, and democratic oversight, while building lasting networks to strengthen democratic resilience in Armenia’s most vulnerable regions.

Activities include election preparation, community outreach, conflict resolution, and youth empowerment, targeting youth, teachers, and media representatives as key agents of change.

Martuni Greenhouse

Thanks to the generous support of Judith Saryan and Victor Zarougian and family and in partnership with Democracy Today NGO, Armenia Tree Project is bringing healthy, fresh and locally-grown food to Martuni’s kindergartens, while creating jobs for displaced families from Artsakh and local residents. The Martuni Municipality is also a key partner in this impactful program.

As part of this effort, two new greenhouses (each 117 sqm) have been built at Kindergarten No. 4 through ATP’s Resilient Roots program.

Center of Excellence on Women, Peace and Security (WPS)

Established on 3 December 2025, the Center of Excellence on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) serves as a platform linking local women’s experiences of conflict and resilience with global peace and security policy. Operating under NGO Democracy Today, the Center supports the implementation of Armenia’s Third National Action Plan on WPS and contributes to international dialogue from the perspective of a small, conflict-affected state. Grounded in human security and women’s leadership, the Center promotes evidence-based policy, regional cooperation, and inclusive peacebuilding. The center, through its research and policy documents plan to provide strategic documents for the government on the areas identified in the Third NAP and beyond.
