“Young Rural Women’s Leadership”

Start date:Jul,2011 End date:Dec,2011

Project purpose

After these basic trainings, organized for the whole group, there was decided to divide the group in two parts as there were two main themes that the participants have been interested in: “Armenian orphanages and the Government decrees regarding them” and “Women in Politics”. After the groups were created special trainings for each group have been organized.  For “Armenian orphanage” group there were organized trainings with the representatives from the Ministry of Social Security (department of “Women’s and children issues”) and the meeting with the representative of UNICEF Armenia.
For the “Women in Politics” there were organized meetings of our women with the government representatives and women parliamentarians.
During the next month both groups were preparing their researches. First of all they did research according to their topics, and as first step, both groups created their questions lists and started their research among different levels of society. The whole month was dedicated to their researches and their reports.
It was important also for the “Orphanage” group, as we had an opportunity to highlight and alarm about this issue and their points of view to a Member of Parliament, who was going to give an interview in mass media and the group prepared a small paper and mentioned about their research results and important questions that the government didn’t pay attention. That was the first and important step that the group did and challenges those who are in power and especially dealing with this issue to be more careful and transparent in their activates and provide correct information.
At the end of December we had the last meeting with the participant and had big discussion about their researches and future activities.

Project target

There were selected young rural women that were interested in the political and social issues of the country in order to increase the role of young rural women in political and social life of the country, presenting them skills and knowledge of leadership through trainings, seminars and meetings on management, elections, women and their participation at Political issues and leadership.

Project activities

At the beginning of the project there were selected young women that were interested in the political and social issues of the country. After the group has been organized we began the main trainings on the following themes:
1.    Management
2.    Elections
3.    Women and their participation at Political issues and
4.    Leadership

We also tried to find out the groups’ interests and weak points on which we would pay attention during our future seminars and meetings and highlight that interested points. Trainings and interactive discussion debuts gave chance to participants to be informed about the whole idea of the topic.

To achieve the results of the project “Democracy Today” started with the training on “Women and their participation at Political issues and Leadership”. After the training the group divided into small groups for making research in special topics that is interested in.
First group decided to research the Armenian orphanages, as the Government tries to adopt a new law on Orphanage children’s issue, without informing the whole situation to public. According to the law the orphanages will be closed, and special families will be created to trustee those children and to take care of them. But the project isn’t perfect, as it doesn’t cover many questions and needs to be developed and be changed.

Second group took the topic “Women in Politics”. This is another topic widely being discussed in Armenia, the Government “wants” to increase the number of women’s participation in all Government structures and make the number of women about 30% and more. The group interested in how the Government will realize that issue, and how and on which women they will rely on,  as sometimes from internet and yellow pages we hear that they will bring their wives and family members to the stage, so to show how Armenia is democratic and how much women we have involved in the Government structures.

There was organized meeting on “Armenian Orphanage” topic, two specialists were invited from RA Ministry of Social Awareness and from UNICEF Armenia, specialist on orphanage children’s issue. During the meeting both specialists answered to the participant’s questions differently and of course brought different statistics. Then there was a discussion and at the end the participants came into conclusion that the Government is not ready for adopting this kind of law at this moment.

During the whole December both groups were preparing their researches and their reports. The groups were working with the trainers during the whole process of their research.

On December we had an opportunity to highlight and alarm about “Orphanage” issue and their points of view to a Member of Parliament, who was going to give an interview in mass media and the group prepared a small paper and mentioned about their research results and important questions that the government didn’t pay attention.

At the end of December we had the last meeting with the participant and had big discussion about their researches and future activities.

During the project period there were organized trainings, seminars and meetings on management, elections, women and their participation at Political issues and leadership. During which a lot of issues and questions were discussed, and as usual all the meetings finished with small discussions. The participants were provided with needed materials and information.
